MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has expressed shock and dismay over Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s definition of Malaysia as ‘Tanah Melayu’.

Its Central Publicity and Information secretary Adam Yii said it was obvious that Tajuddin had inferred Malaya as Malaysia or vice versa.

“We would like to remind him that there would be no Malaysia without Sarawak, but without Malaysia, there is still Sarawak,” Yii said in a statement on Sunday.

He added, “The fact is Sarawak is Fairland Sarawak and we are one of the four entities, namely Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak that formed Malaysia as equal partners on September 16, 1963.

“As far as we are concerned, the following dates are of importance to us — the more important of the two is July 22, 1963 — the day Sarawak was granted self-government and considered to be de facto Sarawak Independence, and is now gazetted as Sarawak Independence Day and a public holiday, the second date is Malaysia Day when the Federation of Malaysia was formed on 16 September , 1963,” he pointed out.

He added that SUPP totally disagreed with police actions to confiscate the Sarawak Crown Flags during Sarawak Independence Day celebration last July 22 because it was part and parcel of Sarawak history and heritage.

“The Sarawak history and heritage ought to be respected and not criminalised,” he stressed.
