KUCHING: The National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) is currently conducting a survey study to identify the causes of mental health issues among students.

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that the study involves sampling groups of individuals aged 18 to 24.

“LPPKN has initiated a study by conducting surveys involving students aged 18 to 24 years, and it is currently at the sampling stage.

“We have undertaken the study, but the complete results are pending as it involves collaboration with other ministries.

“Through this survey, our goal is to pinpoint the specific issues affecting them mentally and address it head on,” she said.

She made these statements when met by reporters after officiating at the Santubong’s Day 2023 programme at Kampung Santubong Waterfront yesterday.

Despite this, Nancy underscored that the current situation is under control, with the study indicating that family economics has a more significant impact on mental health issues.

To date, she noted that previous surveys have covered population issues but did not specifically focus on mental health issues.

“We have collaborated with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) but previous studies only looked at it from a village sampling perspective.

“As a whole, the cause is not yet known, as it involves aspects such as whether children are attending school or not. All these will be included in the survey questions,” she explained.

Additionally, she stressed that her ministry is always committed to addressing this issue by consistently bringing counselling officers for every mental health programme organised.
