KUCHING: Could Sarawak be the next potential destination for caravan or motorhome enthusiasts?

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah thinks there is potential for this form of tourism, and his ministry is exploring the feasibility of the idea.

“I can see that with the Pan Borneo Highway that will be completed soon, my ministry can work together with the local councils to identify certain sites in every division or district where caravans or motorhome tourism could be promoted, similar to how it is done in the West.

“At the same time, ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping) activities would increase in popularity with the development of such tourism,” he told reporters during the ‘Juh Berambeh Sungkei’ programme at Padang Merdeka yesterday (April 9).

With camping providing an opportunity for travellers to enjoy nature and outdoor activities, the minister also said the benefits of camping can enhance family bonding and promote stronger community relations.

Caravans and motorhomes are distinct types of vehicles. A caravan is a wheeled vehicle designed for travel that can be pulled by a car and typically has beds and cooking facilities.

On the other hand, a motorhome is a type of motor vehicle offering mobile living accommodation.

These vehicles offer an alternative to traditional forms of accommodation, such
as hotels or homestays.
