KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology’s Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) have announced a partnership that will offer students a chance to earn dual diplomas in accountancy.

In a statement today, students of Swinburne Sarawak’s Diploma of Accountancy (DoA) now can pursue the ACCA’s Diploma in Accounting and Business (DiAB) at the same time as they complete their second year in the DoA programme.

“To obtain the full ACCA DiAB qualification, students are required to pass two units: the ACCA Financial Accounting paper and an online Foundations in Professionalism ethics module. They can apply for exemptions for another two units in the ACCA DiAB using their completed DoA documents and examination transcripts,” said the university.

Another advantage of this partnership? It helps students save money. The savings, which could be as much as RM2,500, come from lower registration, exemption fees, and a special membership rate for the first two years.

Once they finish their dual diploma, students have two great options. They can continue studying and aim for a bachelor’s degree or start working anywhere the ACCA qualification is respected. For reference, the ACCA DiAB is comparable to the first year of a bachelor’s degree. This means students get the best of both worlds: further study or work opportunities.

To make this partnership official, both institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today. Representatives from Swinburne Sarawak included its Pro Vice-Chancellor and CEO, Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho, and the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Design, and Arts, Professor Brian Wong Kee Mun. Representing ACCA Malaysia was Andrew Lim, who oversees ACCA for Maritime Southeast Asia.

Principal Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Donald Henry Nohed was also present to witness the signing on behalf of Minister Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
