Taib declares open state’s latest landmark

KUCHING: Last night’s official opening of the state-of-the-art Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) was what many Sarawakians were waiting for.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud officiated at the opening ceremony of the museum, which is largest in the country and second largest in Southeast Asia.

Also present were his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Taib, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Before the actual opening ceremony, guests were entertained with a one-hour musical performance that started at 7pm.

The livestream of the ceremony was broadcasted by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on its social media platforms.

At a cost of RM323mil the world-class museum was developed since, and was fully funded by the Sarawak government.

The museum houses some 1,400 artefacts ranging from ceramics to ethnographical and zoological specimens.

Now that the official opening is over, the doors of the museum will be open to the public starting on March 9.

Visitors who wish to go the museum are encouraged to pre-book as entry is limited to 500 persons at a time.

Admission to the museum will be free for the first three months and the last entry each day is at 4pm.
