IBS will be conducting a talk entitled ‘Rivers for Livelihood: Eastern Penan and Lun Bawang Perspectives’.

KUCHING: A talk on the practice of sustainable resource management of clean water from rivers by the Penan and Lun Bawang will be organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Institute of Borneo Studies (IBS) on April 28.

The talk entitled ‘Rivers for Livelihood: Eastern Penan and Lun Bawang Perspective’ will feature Jayl Langub as the speaker, a former civil servant and currently an Associate Research Fellow at Unimas.

“The Penan are traditionally nomadic hunters and gatherers and require clear, fresh water to process their staple sago flour while the Lun Bawang are settled agriculturalists and require clear unpolluted water to provide nutrients for their rice fields.

“The management of the forest cover and its preservations underpin the availability of clean water resources and to ensure this, the cover must be maintained,” said the institute in a statement posted on its Facebook.

Jayl is also an advisor to Forum Masyarakat Adat Dataran Tinggi Borneo (FORMADAT), a local initiative comprising the Lundayeh, Kelabit, Lun Bawang and Sa’ben of the Krayan Highlands, North Kalimantan and the Kelabit and Maligan Highlands of Sarawak and Sabah, whose goal is to maintain the integrity of their highland homeland in the heart of Borneo through conservation and sustainable development.
