SIBU: Renovation works are set to begin soon to convert the Tasik Permai Food Court into the pioneering Sibu Dayak Food Court (SDFC).

SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said SDFC will be the first Dayak food court in Sarawak, while encouraging the Dayak community to actively engage with the forthcoming project.

“I hope that the Dayak community will come together and make this place an attraction for Sibu,” he said in his speech at the SMC annual dinner last night (Dec 29) which was officiated by Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

The SDFC, with an estimated cost of RM700,000, is designed to accommodate 14 stalls and a mini-stage upon completion.

Initially slated for an August 2024 opening, SMC is striving to finish the project before the Gawai Dayak festival.

In his speech, Ting also outlined plans for the renovation of the Rejang Park commercial centre as part of the town’s enhancement initiatives for the upcoming year.

“This year (2023), we have many projects underway. I will visit the Sungai Merah market tomorrow to assess its progress as it is scheduled to be completed by February 25 next year. We are also renovating the public library to better serve the people,” he added.

Highlighting the council’s achievements, Ting said SMC had won a total of 10 awards this year.

He expressed gratitude to the council staff for their dedication in contributing toward making Sibu a better place.

Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley and others.
