Three-day ops nets 11 gamblers

PADAWAN: Police arrested 11 individuals, including four women, for alleged involvement in online gambling and illegal sale of lottery early this week.

The operation codenamed ‘Ops Dadu’ was carried out by Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Sarawak D7 branch around Matang area from Monday (Mar 6) onwards.

Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abg Ahmad said surveillance and intelligence gathering led to the arrests of gambling operators and seizures of apparatus connected with the gambling activities.

“Raids conducted on three consecutive days resulted in the arrests of 11 people, including four women. Nine of them are locals and the other two foreigners.

“Police also seized nine phones, several pieces of paper with numbers written on them and cash amounting to RM2,841, all of which were used for gambling activities,” he said.

A total of 10 investigation papers have been opened under Section 4 (1)(c) and Section 4A (a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, for online gambling and unlicensed public lottery activities.

If convicted for online gambling offences, the penalty is a fine of up to RM50,000 and a jail term of up to three years whereas those convicted for unlicensed public lottery activity face a fine of up to RM200,000 and a jail term of up to five years.
