KUCHING: Setting up a special agency to enhance food security is a good move for Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole.

Deputy Minister of Food Security, Commodity and Regional Development Martin Ben said such an agency is necessary as food security has become an important issue that Malaysia is currently facing.

“The entire nation is currently talking about it. I believe a special agency is needed to tackle the issue.

“It is about time that we looked into the issue and make it official,” he said when met by reporters at the Bidayuh Ethnic Art Night held in conjunction with Gawai Bazaar 2023 at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) compound yesterday (June 20).

Earlier, the federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security announced it is looking into a proposal to set up a special agency to improve food security as a national agenda.

Deputy Minister Chan Foong Hin said the idea to establish the agency was one of the initiatives to tackle the rising cost of living.

He said a preliminary study conducted by the ministry found the establishment of a national food security agency should incorporate four main aspects, namely availability, accessibility, food security, and stability and sustainability.
