KUCHING: The suggestion to have an elevated expressway to end traffic congestion in Kota Samarahan is excellent, said Professor Julaihi Wahid.

The Dean of Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) said there should be at least a minimum of three lanes from Institut Tadbiran Awam Negara (INTAN) to ease traffic flow to the flyover, as well as the traffic to Serian, Kota Sentosa and the housing estates nearby.

He said the two lanes that lead to the flyover would be the expressway to Stutong and Kuching.

“There are so many mixed feelings from road users when it comes to the traffic flow from Kota Samarahan to Kuching. The traffic congestion is often a cause of frustration, low quality of work and high petrol consumption.

“Based on my personal observation, the suggestion for the flyover is excellent,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune.

Julaihi agreed with Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos on how the flyover, if implemented, will complement the proposed Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) in Kota Samarahan, adding that the ART users are economic contributors as well.

“However, the existing old paved road and roundabout have to be maintained to sustain business in the region, especially the existing business centre and housing estates around UNIMAS.

“Generally, the exit way to each business centre is compulsory or otherwise the fast vehicles at the flyover expressway will only focus on the facilities in Kuching,” he added.
