KUCHING: Sarawak will offer insurance and welfare assistance to support its B40 elderly residents next year.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr. Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the primary objective is to safeguard their well-being.

He said that Sarawak is projected to become an ageing society by 2028, with 7 per cent of its population aged over 65.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke to several individuals to gather their opinions on this matter.

People aged between 60 or 65 years old can access insurance and welfare assistance in Sarawak. Sarawak should offer a range of insurance programs for seniors, including health insurance, life insurance, and long-term care insurance, which provide financial security and peace of mind. I think the government should also offer monthly financial support to help cover their basic living expenses.

Elderly can access insurance programmes tailored to their needs, such as senior health coverage that covers medical expenses and hospitalisation costs. They can also access welfare assistance programmes that provide subsidised meals, transportation, and housing options tailored to their needs. Eligibility criteria for insurance and welfare assistance may include income thresholds, with programmes targeting seniors with limited financial resources.

I think the government should provide seniors with insurance options that have lower premiums and special discounts. The government should offer home care services for seniors. Some programmes might require applicants to be permanent residents or citizens of the state to qualify for assistance.

Some insurance plans for seniors may offer additional benefits like coverage for pre-existing conditions or outpatient services. Some welfare programmes also provide opportunities for senior citizens to engage in social and recreational activities to combat loneliness and isolation. As certain insurance plans for seniors may have medical underwriting, considering pre-existing conditions in determining eligibility.

Senior citizens can benefit from insurance programmes by ensuring their families are financially protected and by having access to quality healthcare services. The government may offer grants or subsidies to seniors for home modifications to make their living spaces more accessible and safe. The government may prioritise seniors with disabilities or health conditions when providing welfare assistance.
