Trio jailed 12 months each for stealing rims, tyres

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced three friends each to 12 months in prison for stealing two tyre rims as well as two car tyres from a house in Kampung Sungai Bedil last month.

Nawaziz Yusup, 33, Awang Shifa’a Awang Sebawi, 35 and Mohd Safwatullah, 29, each pleaded guilty to the charges framed under Section 379A of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Act.

If convicted, they can be sentenced to prison for a term of up to seven years and a fine.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi ordered all three of them to serve their time effective on Wednesday (Jan 3).

Nawaziz, Awang Shifa’a and Safwatullah are jointly charged with stealing two tyre rims and Perodua Viva car tyres belonging to a 37-year-old man in the parking lot in front of the victim’s house at about 11.55 pm on Dec 28.

According to the facts of the case, at around 8.30 am on Dec 29, the complainant realised that two tyre rims and two tyres of his car, which was parked in front of his house, were missing and is suspected to have been stolen by someone.

A police report was made for further action and it led to the arrest of the three men around 7.30 pm at a house in Kampung Sungai Bedil.

Investigations found that the three of them admitted to stealing the items and kept it at Nawaziz’s house.

In addition, all three accused had various prior records involving burglary, theft, online gambling and drug abuse.

Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case while the three accused were unrepresented by counsel.
