Trio picked up for multi-district motorcycle thefts

KUCHING: An elderly man and his two accomplices have been arrested for their suspected involvement in a string of motorcycle thefts across Kuching and Padawan districts.

Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the first arrest took place at the Mile 6 public parking area around 7pm on Dec 14.

Acting on intelligence, a team from Sungai Maong police station detained a 51-year-old local man on suspicion of motorcycle theft.

Following the arrest, the suspect led police to the arrest of two more local men aged 40 and 41 at a residence in Beratok, Jalan Kuching-Serian around 8.50 pm.

“Subsequent inspections at the residence unveiled four motorcycles believed to have been stolen.

“Upon investigation, it was determined that one motorcycle was reported missing in the Sungai Maong area on Dec 14, while two others were reported missing in the Siburan area on Nov 27 and Dec 11.

“Moreover, one motorcycle, with a tampered chassis, was handed over to the Padawan Criminal Investigation Division (CID) for further investigation, said Merbin.

The suspects are currently remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist in investigations.

Background checks revealed that all three men, who tested positive for amphetamine, have prior records linked to various crimes and drug-related offenses.

The cases are being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine, upon conviction.
