KUCHING: A study is underway to determine if a federal system of identifying competent contractors can also be implemented in the state.

According to Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, this was being considered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He explained that at the federal level, contractors are required to undergo certain processes under this system.

“They will be evaluated in terms of their finance, experience, technicality, machinery, having a good track record and many more.

“I had a discussion with Datuk Amar (Douglas) on the matter before, and I fully welcome and support his efforts to implement such a system in Sarawak.

“Having this kind of system will definitely help the state appoint trustworthy contractors to finish sick projects here,” he said.

He said that as of now at the federal level, they are looking for ways to reduce sick projects.

“Although we have less than five per cent of sick projects there, for us, it is best to reduce it to zero per cent – where there would be no sick project existing anymore,” he said.

He said this when met by the media during the Maal Hijrah award ceremony at Surau Darul Azim today.

Meanwhile, on the programme that he officiated, Fadillah said aside from talks (ceramah), the folks of Taman Banjaran Serapi had also organised the Maal Hijrah award ceremony in their community level.

He said the ceremony was done to award individuals who had selflessly contributed to the community and also to its development.

“For me, these individuals are an example for the community here. That is why this ceremony is organised.

“Such a ceremony can motivate the people here to always contribute not only to their own families but also to the development of the community,” he said.
