KUCHING: Factors beyond control such as hot and dry weather or lightning strikes, could have caused the fires at Trienekens Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) in Mambong.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the large-scale fire at the waste disposal site last Friday (June 30), was relatively isolated.

“Nonetheless, the current situation at the extinguishing area, is under control.

“The emergency response team (ERT) of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, and Simpok auxiliary firemen helped us to control and extinguish the fire,” he said.

On Monday (July 3), the department had identified several fire spots at the site by using drones and the hottest spot was measured at 301 degrees Celsius.

To put out the fires, a prime mover water tanker from Tabuan Jaya fire station was deployed to the scene and a water pump was set up in sectors 5 and 6 of the waste disposal site.

Four Trienekens bulldozers were also used to break up the burning garbage pile.
