KUCHING: The Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) will form an advisory council to advise it on matters of interest or concern to the state.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said a meeting on the proposed council would be held on December 7.

“I am now in the process of forming an advisory council for UNIFOR. This is long overdue. And it will be a forum where issues, including controversial ones can be discussed amicably.”

Uggah, who is the UNIFOR chairman said this when officiating at the opening ceremony of the new House of Epiphany located at St Thomas’s Cathedral here on Monday (Dec 4).

He said the council, being consultative in nature, will comprise senior leaders of various religions. They will come up with guidelines to address issues judiciously.

“We need to preserve the existing racial and religious harmony, unity and understanding which have always been our beacon in a multi-racial and multi-religious Sarawak.

“We also need to guide each other along the way. We are living in a very challenging world of technological advancement including generative artificial intelligence (AI),” he said.

On another note, he called upon the people to give their full support to the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg so that he could do much more to bring stability, harmony and prosperity to Sarawak.

“Also, with the fast approaching Christmas season, my family and I would like to wish all Christians a very happy and blessed Christmas.

“May the season brings us more joy, better health and prosperity. I would also like to wish all a very happy and prosperous 2024 new year,” said Uggah.
