KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is targeting an enrolment of 20,000 students by 2025.

Vce-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kadim Suaidi said to achieve that its Pusat Pengajian Pra-Universiti will increase the student intake with a projection of 1,000 every year.

In addition to that, the university will also increase the intake of undergraduate students with a projection of 5,000 per year.

“This is our intention, to take about 6,000 new students involving pre-university and undergraduate students every year in 2025,” he said in a speech during the Amanat Naib Canselor 2023 themed ‘Empowering Communities for a Sustainable World’ at DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS, today.

Touching on international students, he said a total of 258 international students from China had registered and enrolled in the Postgraduate Coaching Programme through the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Business School as of February this year.

Kadim said the university is also determined to increase the number of international students from other countries, especially Vietnam and Cambodia.

“As the number of students is increasing with diverse research fields, there is a need to appoint contract academicians from outside UNIMAS as main supervisors or co-supervisors.

“For this purpose and to increase the number of qualified PhD level supervisors, UNIMAS Business School will start recruiting, on behalf of the university, qualified and potential supervisors who will help the university’s agenda in increasing the recruitment of research-mode postgraduate students,” he said.

He said the Student Management System (SMP) is also being improved to facilitate the application process of students to PEP, in addition to using alternative entry to PEP through the ‘APEL A’ system to increase the number of students.

“The university’s efforts to increase the number of international student recruitment will continue by introducing initiatives that coincide with the times and provide a unique experience for international students. Among them is empowering edu-tourism and exploring medical tourism,” he said.

Also present was UNIMAS board of directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Sulong Matjeraie.
