BARAM: The people of Long Terawan are hoping that the nearby Likau Mayoh River would be gazetted as a protected area for the spawning of tapah fish.

On their behalf, Councillor Garry Hassim Wan said the spawning of tapah fish takes place in the river every year.

“We need conservation experts for this. Who knows, one day, this area can be a destination for anglers from within and outside the country,” he said today at Long Terawan during the launch of the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MYSRBN) where Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at.

He also hoped that Long Terawan would become a stopping point for tourists to observe the production of longboats and race boats, adding that the local people keenly participate in water sports such as boat racing.

“Long Terawan has emerged as a champion in the Baram Regatta many times as it has strong rowers and our race boats, which are made by craftsmen from Kampung Long Terawan, are fast,” he said.

“We also wish to build a gallery to display historical artefacts and awards won by the people here in water sports as well as other achievements,” he said.

He said the people of Long Terawan also hoped that their children would do well in school and go on to study engineering, medicine, finance, technology, etc.

“We request the government or private agencies to be directly involved in developing human capital, especially in technology-related fields, so that our children can compete in this technological era,” said Garry.

To him, the implementation of the MYSRBN is the first step to opening up opportunities for students to participate effectively in online learning and to open their minds and interest in the digital world.

He said the local people welcomed the initiative of the state government and private sector in developing the telecommunications sector in rural areas such as Kampung Long Terawan.

He said the people of Long Terawan also requested for the state government and its agencies to look into implementing suitable programmes for the development of the rural economy, especially sustainable agriculture and livestock rearing.
