SIBU: Vocational education and training plays an important role especially in today’s era of rapid technological advancements, globalisation, and the ever-evolving job market.

In stating this Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Michael Tiang said vocational education and training has thus never been more critical as it shapes the future and the workforce of tomorrow.

“The job market is continually changing. Traditional educational pathways alone are often insufficient to equip individuals with the diverse set of skills required by employers.

“This is where vocational education and training comes into play.  Vocational programmes are designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry, offering specialised training that caters to the current needs of the job market.

“These programmes produce graduates who are not just academically qualified but possess the practical skills demanded by employers,” he said in his speech read by Kapitan Lau Sei Kwong at the opening of the Sibu Vocational College Open Week 2023 here Saturday (Sept 9).

He said that vocational education and training emphasises skills that are uniquely human, such as critical thinking, problem-solving and emotional intelligence.

“These skills are invaluable in a world where technology is rapidly advancing, and the ability to adapt and innovate becomes increasingly vital,” he stressed.

Tiang emphasised the importance of vocational education and training, stating that it addresses the evolving job market needs, ensures high employability and fosters skills.

“It is the cornerstone of a workforce that can adapt, thrive and lead in the face of ever-changing challenges.

“Let us invest in and champion vocational education and training, for it is the path to a brighter, more prosperous future for all,” he said.

Also present were Vocational College Kuching Director Dr Lim Ah Juan, Sibu Director Jamali Muhamad and others.
