KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) walikota Lating Minggang said he was happy that traders at the local produce market and their customers have complied with the movement control order (MCO) that has already entered its third phase.

“Kapit is still a green zone, but the public are urged to continue complying with the MCO to curb the spread of Covid-19,” said Lating to the press yesterday morning.

Yesterday morning, Lating together with a team from the council comprising the secretary (Jabang Juntan), councillors, enforcement officers and health officers distributed face masks to the traders and the public at Market Teresang and the Night Street Market.

“I observed that the traders were very cooperative. The number of shoppers was manageable. Most people stayed at home except those who went to the banks and markets,” he said

Before they entered the markets the shoppers were screened by the health staff to ascertain that they were in good health. They also told to practise social distancing.

“The rest of the town was rather quiet, which helps prevent the spread of Covid-19. Longhouse people also remained at home. KDC also did its part by sanitising and fogging the town; check people’s temperatures; did health screening, and enforce social distancing,” said Lating

He also disclosed that Market Teresang will undergo some minor renovations soon to incorporate some safety features and provide better facilities.

On a separate matter, deputy walikota Watson Awan donated a mobile canopy to replace the worn out one used by the health and enforcement officers while on duty at the markets.

Lating received the canopy on behalf of the staff at a simple ceremony held at Market Teresang recently.
