KUCHING: Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said his appointment as Federal Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister was an unexpected but welcomed surprise.
“I expected to be associated with the Ministry of Rural Development or the Ministry of Works, which I consider to be important for the infrastructural development of Sarawak as we are still lagging behind in those aspects.
“I noticed on social media, people were also sceptical of my position in the Cabinet, often linking my portfolios to previous ministries led by me.
“Much speculation was made before my appointment, so much so that when it was announced that my position in the Cabinet would be to lead the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, I was very surprised,” he told the press after arriving at Kuching International Airport here on Wednesday evening.
Nonetheless, Wan Junaidi assured that he was more than capable to undertake the responsibilities given to him by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“I am no stranger to the theory of entrepreneur development and cooperatives because it was part of my research when I was obtaining my doctorate.
“Some of my previous classmates called me and acknowledged that I have a suitable background experience for the job,” he claimed.
Wan Junaidi added that although he had theoretical knowledge of entrepreneur development and cooperatives, he had yet to have a hands-on experience in the development of the sectors.
With the global economic downturn and Covid-19 virus outbreak, he said it was a time of trials for him to be in office.
“This is a challenge for me. In fact, a great challenge to develop entrepreneurs amidst the economic slowdown. It’s not going to be easy, but with support and prayers from everyone, I promise to do my best for this beloved nation.
“I know that it is difficult but I am going to do my best with the help of officers under my ministry,” he added.
