Warrior’s widow lives in poverty

SRI AMAN: The widow of a Sarawak Ranger who died while battling the communist terrorists in 1970 was reportedly living in poverty, depending only on her late husband’s meagre RM243.67 monthly pension.

Linjong Edward, 70, widow of the late Ranger Tinggi Chakom Tinggi, lives in Rumah Karin, Tabut Skrang, near here.

The director of Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Affairs Department (JHEV ATM) Sarawak, Major Pahot Joll recently visited her at the longhouse where she lives alone and in a state of poverty.

During the visit, Pahot presented her with food assistance and donations from the department’s Tabung Jasamu. He also helped her fill documents for the Bantuan Sara Hidup to ease her burden.

The late Ranger Tinggi was with three other Sarawak Rangers who were tracking down communist terrorists at Sungai Rajang on Nov 22, 1970 when they were ambushed. They all perished in the ensuing gun battle.
