KUCHING: Villagers living near rivers and along the coast have been advised to be vigilant and be prepared for any eventuality in view of the high tide phenomenon.

Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development Datuk Julaihi Narawi gave the advice when he visited Sebuyau on yesterday (Nov 16).

Several areas in the Sebuyau state constituency have been affected by floods due to the high tide phenomenon. The floodwaters at Giat Mara Batang Lupar, Kampung Baru Sebuyau, Kampung Hilir Sebuyau, Pekan Sebuyau, Kampung Hulu, Kampung Seberang, Kampung Bajong, Kampung Tungkah and other low lying areas near the river were up to 0.6m deep.

“The situation is so far under control with the Divisional Disaster Committee monitoring it from time to time,” said Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman.

He added the fire department, police and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) members were also monitoring the situation. “I would also like to remind the residents to always comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set up to break the chain of transmission during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
