Water surge claims one life, another still missing

KUCHING: A water surge at a waterfall in Kampung Sebat, Sematan, resulted in the drowning of one man while another remains missing.

The incident occurred at around 4pm today (Apr 12) when four men in their 20s were swept away by a water surge during an outing at the waterfall.

The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre said local villagers rescued three of the men while one remained unaccounted for.

One of the victims, identified as Vincent Tiong Kung Cheng, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers.

Firefighters from Lundu fire station responded to a distress call at 4.55pm, approximately 31 kilometres away from the site.

Despite efforts, the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the missing man will resume tomorrow (Apr 13) after discussions with the police.

Bomba concluded their operations at 7pm today.
