KUCHING: The redesignation of “Chief Minister” to “Premier” is a move to exert and upgrade Sarawak’s position, says a political observer.

Datuk Peter Minos noted that Sarawak was now exerting itself as equals to Malaya and Sabah following the latest amendments to the Federal Constitution.

He said Sarawak’s chief minister was indeed higher in status compared to those in other states.

“I believe this is the intention of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) State Legislative Assembly (DUN) members. This move is one of many measures to make Sarawak equal in all things and matters to Malaya and Sabah,” he said in a statement today.

Commenting on Sarawak DAP’s remarks on the redesignation during the recent DUN sitting, Minos said their action “automatically made the opposition a laughing stock and fools of themselves”.

“By deliberately making fun of the matter, Sarawak DAP members portray themselves as blind followers of their Malayan masters and that they are not taking Sarawak affairs seriously.

“Besides that, it shows that they do not know their job as DUN members well … as a Sarawakian, I must say that it is most regrettable to see that some fellow Sarawakians do not and cannot show respect to and love for Sarawak,” he said.
