KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced a woman to a fine of RM2,000 fine in default 40 days’ imprisonment for illegally possessing RM100,390 in her personal account in a scam.
Zarifah, 46, entered a guilty plea to four offences before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
According to all four allegations, she unlawfully possessed RM100,390 in her personal account, which was deposited in stages.
In September, October, and November of last year, she allegedly deposited the money at a bank on Jalan Laksamana Ang Cheng Ho here.
Prosecution for all offences come under Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offences Ordinance 1958, which carries a maximum three-year jail sentence and an RM500 fine if convicted.
According to the brief facts of the case, the victim is a 64-year-old woman who met a man named Chung Ah Young on Facebook who claimed to be from California.
During the introduction, the man indicated that he needed money from the victim for his ‘Gold & Diamond’ business in Singapore.
The victim, who had been duped by the man, subsequently deposited money into two personal accounts, one of which was under the name of Zarifah Mohamad (accused), in stages from September to November before realising she had been conned.
The victim subsequently filed a police report for further action and investigation, which resulted in the accused’s arrest on October 14.
Due to the inquiry, the accused subsequently created a personal account at a bank in Selangor and gave another person his ATM card.
However, the accused neglected to furnish details of the individual’s information.
Furthermore, the accused’s personal account statement transactions revealed 31 incoming money transactions totalling RM100,390.
The case was prosecuted by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin, and the accused was not represented by a counsel.
