SIBU: Members of the newly created Sibu Business Events Committee (SBEC) will now work with various businesses and sectors in Sarawak to promote Sibu’s business events.

SBEC’s main goal is to improve engagement between associations, governments, universities, and industry partners by developing and implementing strategies in the areas of stakeholder development, business development, capacity building and human capital, destination marketing and communication, and product development.

To support operations in these five areas, subcommittees were constituted.

“Sibu is included in the Sarawak government’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy because there is obvious potential in our city to host corporate events as well as other important events too,” said Councillor Clarence Ting, chairman of the SBEC.

“SBEC is the second committee to be formed since Business Events Sarawak created the Miri Business Events Committee in Miri to carry out fundamental state-wide plans for the growth of business events.

“In addition to tactical planning to acquire additional business events, SBEC will spearhead marketing and industry development initiatives for Sibu,” said Amelia Roziman, CEO of Business Events Sarawak.

“We’re giving committee members the authority to submit strategies and make choices for the betterment of their city and Sarawak’s business events industry as a whole,” she added.

Sibu’s goal for 2022 is to obtain at least 33 business events worth a total of RM93.7 million, with about RM50 million in delegate expenditures and RM5.6 million in tax income. In terms of employment, the local community may expect at least 7,345 long and short-term work possibilities.
