KUCHING: Ten beauties will be vying for the Dayung Gawea Tematu beauty contest title this Saturday night.

The competition is being held in conjunction with the two-day Kampung Tematu Gawai Carnival 2019. Kampung Tematu is a Bidayuh village close to Kuching city along Batu Kitang Road.

The finalists are Nancy Elfira Stephen, 21, from Kampung Tematu, Agnes Anastasha Amat, 24, from Kampung Jagoi Bogag, Kimberly Alta Thomas, 27, from Kampung Emperoh Jambu, Sue Zane Melanie, 22, from Kampung Segubang, Jaydylia Anna Charles, 19, from Kampung Tijirak, Melvien kina Vianney Regud, 18, from Kampung Bawang, Jacline Sahfica Brucly, 18, from Kampung Tematu, Irine Yap Hui Xin, 19, from Kampung Bumbok, Michelle Anak Perai, 18, from Kampung Benuk and Eve Ronald Bujeng, 19, from Kampung Benuk.

The carnival’s organising chairman John Pata said the champion would walk away with RM1,500, a tiara, a bouquet, a sash, a trophy, a hamper and a certificate.

The first runner-up will receive RM1,400, a tiara, a bouquet, a sash, a trophy, a hamper and a certificate while second runner-up will pocket RM1,100, a tiara, a bouquet, a sash, a trophy, a hamper and a certificate.

John said there would be seven consolation prizes of RMRM100 cash each besides a hamper and a certificate.

The subsidiary titles are Miss Talent, Miss Tourism, Miss Popular, Miss Photogenic, Miss Best Costume and Miss Traditional.

The winner of each subsidiary title will receive RM200 cash, a trophy and a sash.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, as the guest of honour, will officiate at the event.

John added four cultural troupes would compete in the traditional music and traditional dance competition to be held on June 21 at 7.30pm.

The troupes are Bijagoi Heritage Group from Kampung Jagoi Duyoh, Oyak Ba’ai from Kampung Atas Singai, Staak B’somu from Kampung Atas, Singai and the Timogah Borneo from Kampung Tetamu.

Meanwhile, 13 children will compete in the Onak Dayung Competition (Kids beauty contest).The contestants are Aldora Joyce Son Bruddy, 6, from Kampung Bumbok, Barbara Joy Bruddy, 5, from Kampung Bumbok, Mary Medelin Son David Melen, 8, from Tematu Village, Amanda Braxton, 7, from Kampung Sungai Du’uh, Siburan, Abigail Ara Jasni, 8, from Kampung Segong, Singai, Belinda Bea Jasni, 7, from Kampung Sungai Pinang, Bau, Shirley Raynold, 8, from Kampung Tembawang Sauh, Louisa Isabelle Frncis, 8, from Kampung Tematu, Cruzita Thelvira Thomie, 7, from Kampung Tematu, Helena

Alvina Ancelm Fridrick, 8, from Kampung Tematu, Elliena Rachel Gibson, 7, from Kampung Tematu andCarmela Christabel Polycarp, 8, from Kampung Tematu.

Acting State Secretary Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik will officiate at the event.

John said prizes will also be awarded to two lucky visitors (man and woman) with the best dress traditional costumes (Bidayuh, Iban or Orang Ulu) on the night of June 22.

“Various activities like sales of food and beverages and handicrafts will also be held throughout the two-day carnival and members of the public are invited to attend,” he said, adding that admission was free.

Lucky draw tickets will also be on sale during the carnival.
