50 village needy get contributions at event

KUCHING: Fifty asnaf (needy) received contributions at the “Sekampit Beras Sekilo Gula” (a bag of rice and a kilo of sugar) programme held at Kpg Matang Batu 10 near here, yesterday.

Each recipient received a bag of rice sponsored by Padiberas National Berhad (Bernas), a packet of sugar, a can of condensed milk and a packet of wheat flour.

The handing over ceremony was officiated at by Senator Dr Zaiedi Suhaili.

According to Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS) director Jamaliah Ahmad, the programme was an annual one aimed at fostering ties among the people involved and to encourage the sadaqah (charity) habit.

“This event is something that we, Sarawakians, should be proud of because a local higher education institution goes to the ground to contribute to the community,” she told reporters after the event.

Zaiedi also hoped that PKS would continue to with its effort such as forming a joint platform to provide skills courses for the community.

“I also urge youngsters to grab the opportunity by joining training courses which teach them technical as well as vocational skills.

“This is because the initiative will also encourage lifelong learning for the betterment of the community,” he said.

The event was organised by Puspanita of PKS in collaboration with the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Kpg Matang Batu 10.

During the programme, packets of “bubur lambuk” (savoury porridge) were also distribution to the villagers. The preparation and cooking of the “bubur lambuk” on a “gotong royong” basis started at 8am.
