60 contingents expected in Miri street parade

MIRI: As many as 60 contingents are preparing to participate in the Miri City Street Parade on Aug 19 in conjunction to the 60th Sarawak Independence Day celebration.

Miri City mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang said that the contingents consisted of government agencies, schools and non-government organisations.

“This year’s parade attracted not only contingents from Sarawak but also contingents from overseas.

“This time, I can proudly announce that Romeo Salda city mayor, La Trinidad Benguet from the Philippines and his group will also be participating,” he said at the Miri City Street Parade press conference here yesterday (Aug 10).

Also expected to attend the parade are the Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Abdul Karim will do a flag off at 7 pm while the Premier is expected to arrive at 8 pm. There will also be a live concert.

“Among the artistes who will entertain the visitors that night are Dayang Nurfaizah, Bob Yusuf and many more.

“There will be pocket shows, food trucks, a parade competition together with fireworks show that will be held at Bukit Telaga Minyak Miri right after the closing ceremony,” he said.

Yii said that the parade would start at the Miri City Council Building and finish at Miri Times Square.

He also said the parade would carry the theme ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’.

Previously, a 60th Sarawak Independence Day celebration parade was held in Kuching on July 22 while another parade will take place in Sibu on August 12.

Also present during the press conference yesterday were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting; Miri City deputy mayor, Ariffin Mohamad and Miri District Police Chief ACP, Alexson Naga Chabu.
