KUCHING: A total of 73 Grade A and B contractors of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) signed their annual-term contracts and took their oaths of commitment yesterday.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang officiated at the contract signing and oath of commitment at the MPP Council Hall.

According to Lo, the oath-taking was a declaration of the contractors to perform, deliver and dedication towards ensuring success of their projects.

“It is to boost their morale and they must perform well to ensure the sustainability of their grade or even improving the grade in future.

“They also must uphold the good image of MPP at all times, whereby they are supposed to deliver the best job at the best price,” said Lo when speaking to reporters after the ceremony.

Contractors involved in the signing comprised those involved in three departments namely engineering department, landscape department and public health department.

“The engineering department will take care of the construction or maintenance of buildings and other related matters while the landscape department is in charge of trees, grass-cutting, open spaces and others. Public health is in charge of drainage, rubbish collection and other related matters.

“The annual-term contract total cost is not less than RM20 million which is covering all the departments,” he said.

Meanwhile, Lo also reminded the contractors to keep their reputation in track to avoid their grade being reduced to Grade C and below.

“We have been grading the performances of these grade A and B contractors since five years ago to build them up. Therefore, they must do well to maintain their grades which would enable them to get tenders in future.

“If their grade get lower, for example grade C and below, they will be terminated from the tender list or even get penalised for their irresponsibility on their project, and will not get tenders from the council for the next two years,” he reminded.

Lo also said that the hard work of MPP staff together with the contractors who achieved grade A and B had made MPP in good shape management wise.

“With the minimum supervision in the vast jurisdiction area, MPP is able to manage all the contractors well even though they only have three engineers with four technical assistants to control all the 270 projects last year.

“The population under MPP is over 365,000 with 60,000 properties and 980 square kilometres of area which is almost three times the size of Singapore but with only 23 enforcement officers.

“It is indeed an excellent situation as the

responsible contractor that we see today with MPP has made everything easy,” he said.
