KUCHING: The state government has identified five areas where affordable houses will be built.

These areas are Bako-Buntal, Sungai Maong-Segedup, Gita Baru, Kampung Senari and Lundu-Sematan.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the government understands housing is a problem made worse by rural-urban migration pressure as villagers move here to look for jobs and other opportunities.

He said with the areas already identified, the Land and Survey Department has been directed to survey them and at the same time roads leading to them will also be upgraded.

“We will do the earth filling work first, lay the water mains and electricity lines, build concrete drains and tar the roads. And the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government will cover all these costs,” he said during the “Majlis Ramah Mesra Aidilfitri Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Zon Kuching 2019” event at Pullman Hotel on Monday night.

On the land premium, he said it has been decreased to only RM2,500 to be paid over a period of 10 years, which is RM250 a year.

As for the prices of the houses, they are between RM80,000 and RM100,000, and each of the land lots are more than 12 points in size.

According to Abang Johari loans would be provided to the buyers, and they can be applied for from Mutiara Mortgage & Credit Sdn Bhd which is owned by the state government.

He pointed out that these are all initiatives of the Sarawak government which go to show how important it is for GPS to stay in power so as to continue serving the people.

And then he made everybody perk up and attentive by saying, “We pray … there is something I want to announce this November to increase our state’s revenue.”

He explained that he could not make the announcement earlier as that would be premature.

“If everything goes smoothly, by 2030, Sarawak will be the most developed state in Malaysia. God willing it will also be the state with the highest revenue,” he said confidently to loud applause.
