MIRI: The ceiling of Miri Civic Centre (Dewan Suarah Miri) that collapsed during strong winds last Friday is expected to cost RM1 million to repair, said Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

The cost would also cover upgrades to the building.

Lee, who is also minister in-charge of Miri Division Disaster Management Committee, said this after chairing a meeting of the committee in the afternoon of the same day.

“The initial cost estimate prepared by the Public Works Department (JKR) involved upgrading the building structure,” he explained.

However, Lee did not disclose when the repair work would commence.

“The repair would include replacing the damaged ceiling, wiring around the affected area and upgrading the building structure itself,” he said.

Lee added that he had instructed Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Malaysian Civil Defence Department to carry out safety checks to determine the safety of the building.

“At the moment, Miri public library which is located inside the building has been temporarily closed,” Lee said.

Regarding several stalls and premises including two longhouses damaged by a strong wind in Batu Niah on July 23, Lee said Miri Welfare Department would assist the victims.
