MARUDI: Leaders must always instil the spirit of patriotism and love for the country among the people through patriotic programmes and community activities.

Highlighting this during an “Info on wheel Merdeka programme” here last Tuesday, Marudi Fire and Rescue (Bomba) chief Maureen Sim Ah Lian said, a united society, regardless of political or religious backgrounds, was crucial to a progressive Malaysia.

The event, held in conjunction with the Merdeka Month, was attended by local firemen and officers from the Marudi Information Department.

“Unity is a core value that holds us together as a strong nation, as we enter into the new normal following the Covid-19 pandemic, we are observing the National Day with standard operating procedures (SOP) laid down by the government as part of efforts to curb the disease,” she said.

However, the new normal should not dampen their patriotic spirit.

“Observe the SOP, wear face masks and practise physical distancing while celebrating the event,” she advised.
