KOTA SAMARAHAN: The contributions of research, consultancy and appointment of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) experts to committees at state and national levels are  significant in line with the nation’s Covid-19 fight.

“As a higher learning institution, we are also concerned about the pandemic and directly responsible in helping the National Recovery Plan.

“Unimas has implemented several initiatives and activities,” said Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.

He was officiating at the Fly the Jalur Gemilang event in conjunction with National Month and Malaysia Day 2021 here on Friday (Aug 13).

Among the initiatives, he explained, were creating a Unimas vaccination centre (PPV) to support the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“Unimas PPV began on June 14 and operated out of Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.

“We have administered the Covid-19 vaccine to over 106,610 people.”

Prof Kadim also noted that Unimas involved itself in research efforts and physical contributions to assist the state and federal governments in the pandemic fight.

“Apart from that, teaching and learning sessions and several academic programmes such as webinars and knowledge sharing were implemented online as we are concerned about the health and safety of students and staff.

“Health and safety guidelines were also strictly enforced, with cooperation from all parties.”

Prof Kadim added that the theme of last year’s National Month celebration, ‘Malaysia Prihatin’, was apt as Unimas cared not only for its staff and students but also the community.

During the ceremony, he handed over the Jalur Gemilang flag to each Unimas Responsibility Centre representative, to be flown at the centres as an effort to get people to fly the flag during National Month.

The ceremony was also attended by Unimas Board of Directors chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie.
