SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch chairman, Councillor Wong Ching Yong hopes the State Education Department can channel an allocation as soon as possible to SK Sungai Durin.
Wong spoke to reporters on Sunday (August 15) after inspecting the condition of the dilapidated school last Saturday.
He explained that to date, the department had not allocated any funds to the school to repair its facilities.
“Before this, in November last year, I wrote a letter to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg about the problems faced by the school and then applied for funds to improve its facilities.
“The other schools in the Dudong constituency have received their respective allocations but not SK Sungai Durin.
“This school is too old. The dining hall, dormitory, zinc roof and ceiling, wooden building and the floor that houses the classrooms have long been eaten by termites and can collapse any moment.
“That’s why I ask for the good services of the relevant parties to immediately channel the allocation to this school and also take into account the safety factors of students and teachers if the school session opens this September,” he added.
According to Wong, who is also the Sibu Rural District Council deputy chairman, the renovation work was very important because the school was the largest in Dudong. It had 240 students from more than 20 longhouses.
Because of that, he felt that the school should receive the allocation as soon as possible so that repair work could be carried out.
Also accompanying him was the SK Sungai Durin headmaster, Sumbang Unjong.
