KUCHING: To operate in Sarawak, Beam e-scooter operators must obtain permits and licences from authorities such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and other related agencies.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng stated that the recent ban on the use of scooters in MBKS jurisdiction was due to legal reasons as well as the lack of safety measures.

He added that like any new company, the company registered in Kuala Lumpur must obtain a permit or licence through the proper channels before operating in Sarawak.

“Our priority, in my opinion, is the safety of the people. As a result, if you want to start a business, you must obtain permits and licences through the proper channels.

“For example, you must go to JPJ, PDRM, and all related agencies because riding an e-scooter on normal roads, public roads, is not permitted for safety reasons.”

Wee made the remarks on Friday (Jan 13) after launching the Neurodivergent 2023 Mural Art and Bazaar at Telang Usan Hotel here.

Simultaneously, he emphasised that operators did not provide users with any protective equipment, such as helmets, which contributed to the ban.

“We also prohibited the use of (e-scooters) in our parks because they (parks) are not designed for this type of scooter. Everything is set up for pedestrians to walk and run on.

“To be fair, we don’t want anyone to get hurt while using the scooter.

“Are you willing to put your life in danger? For MBKS, we try to prevent anything that can endanger people’s lives.”
