KUCHING: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) president Voon Lee Shan appears to have a lack of understanding about how the State Constitution functions.

Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice president Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Voon in a recent video clip insinuated that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government might change the position of the Head of State (TYT) to ‘Sultan’, which according to Abdul Karim, is absurd.

“I was quite perplexed with what he said in the video about renaming the post of TYT to Sultan. Where in the world did he come up with the idea that Sarawak might have its own sultanate?

“Maybe age is catching up with him but coming from a senior lawyer, who knows about how the State Constitution works, there is no way we can just rename TYT to Sultan.

“This is totally crazy, and it can only come from a crazy person,” he told the press here, today.

Meanwhile, in another response to Voon’s allegation of calling PBK a ‘mosquito’ (minor) party and alleging that GPS could bulldoze laws and policies that can affect the state, Abdul Karim said the former has to admit that PBK is indeed a ‘parti nyamok’.

“It is a mosquito party. They have been contesting and losing deposits, so what more can you?”

PBK is fielding a candidate in the coming Jepak by-election.

In the 12th Sarawak state election, the late incumbent Datuk Talib Zulipilip retained Jepak by polling 6,277 votes, defeating Raba’ah Tudin of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Stevenson Joseph Sumbang (PBK) and Independent Tuah Kazan.

The coming Jepak by-election will see a three-cornered fight involving Stevenson, GPS candidate Iskandar Turkee and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) candidate Chieng Lea Phing.
