KANOWIT: The Advocates Association of Sarawak is urgently calling on the police to take action against those responsible for breaking into the surrounding area of Kanowit District Office which led to a riot last Tuesday.

President Gurvir Singh Sandhu, in a statement, expressed deep concern about the incident, which occurred at around 1.30 pm during the Circuit Court session at the Magistrate’s Court within the Kanowit District Office premises.

According to the police, the riot erupted following the court’s proceedings involving certain individuals.

“What is particularly shocking is the action of some individuals who broke into the District Office’s surrounding area and began assaulting others on the premises,” he said.

Reports also indicate that two individuals sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Sibu Hospital.

“The sanctity of the court’s physical space has been compromised by such action, and we call upon the police to promptly apprehend those responsible,” he said.

Gurvir strongly condemned the action of these individuals and also questioned why there was an inadequate police presence on the premises, despite a large crowd gathering earlier that morning while court proceedings were ongoing.

“Even more concerning is the departure of police personnel from the scene, leaving court staff, accused person, and advocates defenceless. It is the responsibility of the police to ensure order and safety during such proceedings,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to fulfilling its duty without fear or favour, despite the intimidation tactics by certain individuals.

“We urge the police to swiftly take action and thoroughly investigate those responsible for this unwarranted incident, holding them accountable for their action.”
