KUCHING: The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Blood Bank Unit managed to collect 112 pints of blood from army personnel on Wednesday (July 20).

The blood donation drive, which was also opened to the public, was held at Plaza Merdeka here to celebrate the 1st Infantry Division’s 56th anniversary.

Third Brigade commander Brig-Gen Mohd Kamil Abdul Latiff told the media that the army would continue to donate blood once every three months to ensure sufficient stock for patients.

“If there is a problem with blood supply, the Ministry of Health will work closely with the army such as the Eastern Field Command, 1st Infantry Division and 3rd Infantry Brigade,” he said after officiating the blood drive.

Meanwhile, when asked about the blood stock following the country’s transition into the endemic phase, transfusion physician Dr Wong Yi Shen said stock was good and thanks to the army, it had been increased.

“We require at least 50 to 70 pints daily for patients. The ministry expresses its gratitude to the army for their help.”
