KUCHING: One person was killed while another badly injured when a fertiliser laden lorry they were travelling in collided with a school bus near Kampung Jirok, Simunjan Serian – Sri Aman Road yesterday.

The deceased, identified as lorry driver assistant, Jong Khiam Yuan, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Balai Ringin Health Clinic.

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department said Jong was pronounced dead at 11.22am due to inner injuries ‘Hypovolagmic Shock due to open book fracture with distal left femur comminuted fracture and intraabdominal injury’.

In the 5.53am incident, a school bus was carrying out its routine to ferry students to SMK Balai Ringin when it was rear ended by the lorry.

Initial investigation revealed that the lorry had attempted to overtake the school bus, which was stationery, when another four-wheel-drive vehicle also attempted to overtake both heavy vehicles.

The lorry driver was shocked and in his attempt to avoid a  collision, made a left turn and crashed into the bus.

Following the impact of the collision all three occupants in the lorry were pinned to their seats and trapped in the wreckage.

Two of the three victims suffered broken legs. The other 41-year-old assistant was referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Five of the eight students aged between 13 and 17 received outpatient treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
