SIBU: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to allocate funds for Minor Rural Projects (MRP) in the opposition-held Bawang Assan constituency, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said discussions will be held with the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew, who is also chairman of the Sarawak United People’s Party’s Bawang Assan Branch, to determine the priority of projects to be implemented.

“We are still in discussions with the SMC and the senator to determine which projects will be implemented first. Since no projects have been carried out for the past 10 years, everyone now wants to be prioritised,” said Dr Sim who is SUPP president.

“We want to thank Abang Johari for his confidence in SUPP to oversee the projects.

“We will discuss with the SMC chairman and the senator because the implementing agency is not SUPP, but a government agency due to government funding. We will proceed according to priority,” he said in his speech at the SUPP Bawang Assan Ngiling Bidai Ceremony held here Saturday (June 10).

Dr Sim, who also serves as the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, urged the people, especially party members, to work together to regain the Bawang Assan seat for the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

He emphasised that winning the seat is crucial to secure more funding for the development of the constituency.

“If we don’t win, we can only ‘tengok saja’ and we (in Bawang Assan) have been observing for 10 years. The Premier is generous by providing a small allocation. What matters is that after that, we must take action to ensure victory. Winning (the seat) is crucial for more allocation,” he sid.
