KUCHING: Members of the public are reminded to be extra careful and not become victims of scams during this Covid-19 crisis.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah urged the public to watch out before making large payments for face masks, hand sanitisers or giving bank details at this time.

“At this trying time, we need to hold tight to our purse, so to speak. Giving into temptation should be the last thing on our mind right now,” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

She said now it was important to save money to purchase for essential goods or basic needs first.

“This is because we do not know when the movement control order (MCO) will be lifted,” she added.

Last Monday, Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said between Feb 9 till March 22, there were a total of 10 cases of face mask scams involving more than RM350,000 losses.
