KUCHING: Any friction between Democractic Action Party (DAP) and People’s Justice Party (PKR) will be a bonus to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the coming state election (PRN12) and general election (GE15).

Recently, a dispute arose between PKR and DAP Sarawak over their choice of prime minister-nominee — with DAP Sarawak backing Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and PKR Sarawak supporting party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We can see a problem here as DAP Sarawak appears to be defying its central leadership decisions.

“For PKR, both Central and Sarawak initially followed Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s idea of Shafie becoming the next prime minister if PH is victorious, but both changed their mind after a PH presidential council meeting as now the party is backing Anwar for the top job,” political observer, Datuk Peter Minos told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday.

Minos also pointed out that this was problematic to PH — as the two coalition parties supporting different individuals might lead to a crisis and hence, divided over the prime minister’s issue.

“The question is: Why does DAP Sarawak defy its central leadership decision and support Shafie for prime minister?

“DAP Sarawak perhaps forgets one thing — that Shafie is not acceptable by central PH and by the rakyat in Malaya.”

Minos also highlighted a much bigger problem facing the two opposition parties — Bumiputera members in both DAP and PKR Sarawak are leaving and resigning from the two parties.

“I think the Dayaks are losing respect and confidence in the two Malaya-based parties for being a failure while in power for 22 months — breaking promises and doing little or nothing good, and, at the same time, bullying Sarawak badly,” he said.
