KUCHING: A reporter from a local daily here, was left shocked after his house at Jalan Stephen Yong was broken into on Sunday (Mar 5).

It is understood that the burglar(s) made off with several valuable items such as a high-end DSLR camera, two lenses, three phones, a pair of shoes and a bag, all valued at RM24,000.

The 34-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he had moved into his new place with his girlfriend about a month ago.

“My girlfriend and I were not home for about nine hours prior to the incident. We were about to install a closed circuit television (CCTV) for our house.

“When we returned home around 7pm, I found my belongings in the office scattered and the stainless steel to my back grill was forcefully broken.

“I quickly lodged a police report pertaining to the incident at Mile 10 police station,” he said.

He suspected that the incident happened between 5pm and 6pm, going by his neighbour’s CCTV showing their dogs barking at that time.

The reporter shared that the burglar had used a wooden hoe to break the stainless steel bars to his back grill and forced open the panel window to reach for the kitchen door knob.

“I would say the burglar might be a professional or habitual criminal because how would one know that he or she could actually break one of the bar grills easily with the hoe,” he said.

On the stolen items, he described his most significant loss was the DSLR camera and lenses, which were used for work.

The reporter stated that the equipment was not only expensive but also held immense sentimental value.

“The loss of the camera and lenses meant that I would now have to face significant disruptions in my work.

“However, the burglar left behind other valuable items such as a Playstation 5 (PS5) and a personal computer, which baffled me.

“I am thankful for still having some of my possessions and lucky that the burglar had not taken more,” he said.
