KUCHING: With more heritage trails coming up which lead to Kampung Opar, Kampung Grogo, and Kampung Stenggang, Bung Bratak will be a boon and a special place for jungle hikers, weekend retreaters, and nature lovers.

“We are keeping our promise to gradually turn Bung Bratak into the best jungle mountain-top historical and cultural centre in the whole of Borneo,” said Bung Bratak Heritage Centre chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

“Give us time and money, we will achieve this,” he added.

He said that a tour group from Kuala Lumpur (KL) had visited Bung Bratak over the weekend, climbing to the very top and viewing the mountain waterfall.

“They enjoyed the overnight cultural function at the mountain-top Bidayuh ancient settlement,” he said.

According to him, they loved staying at the traditional longhouse at Bung Bratak Heritage Centre and they enjoyed the mountain scenery, fresh air, spring water, and trekking along heritage trails to the very top.

“Nothing compares to nature and the basics,” said the tour group leader.

The visiting troupe said that many KL city groups would visit Bung Bratak for its history, natural beauty, uniqueness, and environment ― an escape from the concrete jungle of KL.

Minos said that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) described Bung Bratak as the first of its kind in Borneo, whereby an ancient native settlement was honoured with a historical cultural centre.

“Furthermore, the surrounding natural environment of forest, plants, flora, and fauna are fully protected and preserved,” he said.

He said that it was a unique joint project between the government and a non-governmental organisation.
