SEMPORNA: Career carnivals organised by Sabah government departments and agencies could help the state reduce the unemployment rate, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said such carnivals, especially when held in the rural areas, could bring job seekers closer to employers, hence giving them a platform to gain employment.

“The state government will continue to work at attracting more local and foreign investors so as to create more job opportunities for the people of Sabah. However, they need to improve their skills to be productive and competitive,” he said at the opening of the Semporna district-level Career Carnival, here today.

His speech text was read by state Education and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob.

The one-day seminar organised by the Sabah Manpower Department in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Department, also promoted the JobsMalaysia and Sabah Job Centre online systems to employers and job seekers.

With a going-to-the-ground concept, the carnival also involved a four-wheel-drive vehicle convoy travelling to Kota Kinabalu, Keningau, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

Mohd Shafie urged the state government departments and agencies to continue practising the going-to-the-ground concept in serving the people and providing skills training, particularly to those in the rural areas. –Bernama
