KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat has launched the Koperasi Tatai Ruai Kapit Berhad, a cooperative.

Its setup was the initiative of the residents of Tatai Ruai, KM4 Jalan Bukit Goram, to enable them to generate income through business.

“This is a good thing to set up,” said Jamit, adding: “The government encourages the people to set up cooperatives, especially in villages to run business.”

“Through cooperatives, this would encourage them to invest as shareholders, to generate economic activities, train to manage small businesses, convenient services at your doorstep with basic necessities like rice, cooking oil, canned stuff, detergent, washing powder, cooking gas, available,” he said at the launching ceremony recently.

“Prices (services) at the cooperative must be competitive,” he stressed.

“The success of the cooperative depended on the goods available and the price must be competitive where the profits or dividends are shared among shareholders.”

Jamit also announced a grant from his MRP totalling RM5,000 for the cooperative.

Koperasi Tatai Ruai Kapit Berhad chairman Jarrau Tuan, who also spoke at the ceremony, said: “There are 47 houses at Tatai Ruai. It is quite far from Kapit town, and the cooperative serves as convenient one-stop centre with basic services including the sale of food items such as rice, sugar, salt, canned stuff, cooking oil, cooking gas, washing powder and detergent.”

“Residents need not travel all the way to town to buy something. They can just drop by the cooperative. This is convenient store to benefit everybody here.”

He thanked Tuai Rumah Salang Nyegang and all heads of families at Tatai Ruai for their support.

“When I first raised the idea, they (heads of families) supported the idea. To me, this is an encouragement and a good start.

“We will apply to the relevant agency like the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumerism for subsidised items at lower prices to be sold here to benefit the villagers”, he explained.
