Cops arrest 2 men for robbing woman at shopping mall

KUCHING: Two locals who allegedly robbed a 24-year-old woman of her jewellery and phone at a well-known shopping mall restroom along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Adruce here were arrested by police.

The victim, who sustained injuries during the incident, was found in a distressed state by her boyfriend.

Kuching acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa confirmed the incident, saying a report was lodged at 3.53 am on Saturday (Sept 2).

Acting on information, a police team led by Insp Muzaffar Shah of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), swiftly arrested the two 19-year-old men at the scene of the crime.

“During the arrest, the team seized a black shirt, a ring, two gold chains, and a branded handbag from one of the suspects.

“Both suspects have been remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, with the first suspect’s remand extending until Sept 9, and the second suspect’s remand until Sept 10 to facilitate investigations,” he said.

Background checks found that both suspects did not have any criminal records. Both tested negative for drugs.

Merbin reminded the public to refrain from disseminating false or inaccurate statements or comments on the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing injuries while committing robbery.

If convicted, the offenders face up to 20 years in prison, along with a fine or whipping.
