SAMARAHAN: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) yesterday received 26,000 face masks from the Sarawak government and began distributing them to households in the area.

The free face masks were part of the Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance Package.

MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said that each household received a pack of six face masks, since Kota Samarahan is a Covid-19 red zone.

He said that 16 MPKS councillors (including himself), 11 MPKS staff, and 15 volunteers from neighbourhood watch committees (KRT) conducted the distribution.

“MPKS is covering 92 housing estates with 27,618 households or families,” he said, noting that two of the housing estates — Taman Uni Garden and Taman Desa Ilmu — were simultaneously under the active case detection programme by the Health Department.

He estimated that this second phase of distribution would be completed in two days, finishing by today (May 1).

According to him, the first phase of face masks had already been distributed to villages in Samarahan by Resident and District Offices.

“Most probably, there will be a third phase of free face masks coming up and they will be distributed accordingly, so that every household in Samarahan will have them,” he said.

On behalf of the council, Minos expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak government for allocating the free face masks.

“This gesture is greatly appreciated by MPKS and the locals. Let us all work together in getting rid of Covid-19 in any way we possibly can, until the virus is gone for good,” he said.
